BOEDDHISME: Een Tara is in het boeddhisme een vrouwelijke godheid van verlichtende wijsheid. Zij heeft 21 verschillende gedaanten die alle Tara heten in alle kleuren van de regenboog, zoals de Groene Tara en de Witte Tara resp. de godheden van het moederschap en van het handelen. In deze twee favoriete gedaanten zit ze op een troon van lotus en maan en wanneer ze een been uitsteekt dan betekent dit dat ze gereed is tot handelen.Tara betekent letterlijk de redster. In het boeddhisme is Tara een uitstraling van de bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. Ze is ontstaan uit tranen van Avalokitesvara, die vloeiden uit compassie met alle wezens. Tara is daarom bovenal de essentie (godheid) van het medeleven. Zij is de moeder van het Tibetaanse volk en staat bekend als een vrome koningin of gemalin.
HINDOEISME: In de Shaivistische en Shaktistische traditie van het hindoeïsme is de godin Tara (Sanskriet: तारा, Bengaals: তারা, Iast: Tārā) de tweede van de tien Mahavidia's. Ze wordt beschouwd als een vorm van Adishakti, de tantrische manifestatie van Parvati. Haar drie bekendste vormen zijn Ekajaṭā, Ugratara en Nīlasarasvatī (ook wel gespeld als Neelasaraswati, Neela Saraswati of Neelsaraswati)

In Buddhism, Tara is a female deity of enlightening wisdom. She has 21 different forms, all called Tara, in all the colors of the rainbow, such as Green Tara and White Tara, the deities of motherhood and action, respectively. In these two favored forms, she sits on a throne of lotus and moon, and when she extends a leg, it signifies her readiness for action. Tara literally means savior. In Buddhism, Tara is an emanation of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. She arose from Avalokitesvara's tears, which flowed out of compassion for all beings. Tara is therefore, above all, the essence (deity) of compassion. She is the mother of the Tibetan people and is known as a pious queen or consort.
HINDU tradition: In the Shaivism and Shaktism tradition of Hinduism, the goddess Tara (Sanskrit: तारा, Bengali: তারা, Iast: Tārā) is the second of the ten Mahavidias.
